JALC – HISTORY est. 1983
JapanAmerica Learning Center has been in operation since 1983 serving as an educational resource for both Japanese and American students who are interested in building their language skills and cultural interests.

JALC - Mission Statement
By providing an interactive approach to learning, JALC believes students of any language will be able to accomplish whatever goals they set. It is only through the hard work and dedication of the staff, parents, and community that these students can realize their potential and strive to reach and create new goals throughout their lives. We seek to instill a strong dedication to understanding not only the fundamentals of language but the requirement of both teacher and student to never limit the lessons to words on a page, rather how they can relate the words to the world outside JALC’s doors.

Please Help Support Baby Sofia!

On March 13, 2009, Baby Sofia was born to Janine O’Hara, and her fiancé George Tousa. Unfortunately, there were difficulties with the pregnancy, which caused Sofia to suffer several medical complications, including facial nerve damage. She is unable to eat properly, and has difficulty swallowing, and so is in great danger of choking. Though her condition has been slowly improving, Sofia is still under medical treatment, and facing several long months of physical therapy.

Worse still, on March 22, Janine O’Hara, a new mother for only ten days, was struck by an aneurysm, and died. She was 29 years old.

Sofia’s grandparents, Ray and Janet O’Hara, despite the pain of recently burying their daughter, have courageously committed themselves to raising the new baby.

"Friends of Janine" has been formed to raise funds and, more importantly, emotional and practical support for Sofia's family. We are planning a number of events through the Spring of 2009, to culminate with "Rockin' the Cradle", an all-day Street Festival on Gramatan Ave in the Fleetwood section of Mt Vernon (10552), on Sunday June 28 from 12n to 6pm.

Please join us for a full day of fun and  music!!
